BIOTA-South fieldsites: Knersvlakte & Richtersveld South Africa Africa Contact: Dr. Ute Schmiedel, Hamburg University, Germany In 2007 proposed by: Dr. Ute Schmiedel, Hamburg University, Germany BIOTA is a German BMBF (German Ministry of Education and Research) fundend project in which various universities are involved to study the biodiversity and ecosystems of West (BIOTA-West), East (BIOTA-East) and South Africa (BIOTA-South). The Knersvlakte and Richtersveld ar the focal sites of BIOTA-South and were proposed as ATBI+M sites as they are part of the South African biodiversity hotspot. They fall into the the Knersvlakte conservation area and the Richtersveld National Park, respectively. The area is particularly rich in succulent flowering plants that are threatened by ongoing livestock grazing pressures.
