The Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali of Turin is pleased to inform you that an exhibition on biodiversity “A different future - Saving biodiversity to save the Planet” will be inaugurated on Friday October 22nd at 6 pm. The exhibition (23 october 2010-12 June 2011) is one of the initiatives promoted for the International Year of Biodiversity, and its main objective is to draw the attention on the state of the Planet and the importance of natural and cultural biodiversity for its survival. A section of the exhibition will be dedicated to the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory + Monitoring Mercantour-Alpi Marittime and will include 60 marvellous images taken by two nature photographers: the photos illustrate the astonishing variety in landscapes, the animal and plant richness, and the fascinating techniques used for the research carried out in the different environments which characterize the territory (woods, high altitude prairies, wetlands, and caves).
Bryo-blitz in August

From July 28 to August 2 2010 dr. Arne Saatkamp (Institut Méditerranéen d'Écologie et de Paléoécologie, Marseille, France) together with Jan Peter Frahm (Universität Bonn, Germany), Marc Philippe (Université Lyon, France), Michael Lüth, Sebastien Delhaye (Office national des forets, Mézel), Benjamin Laenen e Aurélie Désamoré (Université of Liège, Belgium), Luca Miserere, Michele Aleffi and Roberta Tacchi (Università degli Studi di Camerino, Italy), Cédric Dentant (Parc National des Ecrins, France), Benoit Offerhaus (Office national des forets, Nice, France), explored parts of the Mercantour-Marittime territory searching for bryophytes (photos - link). The 12 taxonomists visited the Vallée de Valmasque, Vallée de Fontanalba, Plateau de la Céva and the Foret de Cairos. Aleffi, Tacchi and Miserere spent most of the days in the Alpi Marittime Natural Park focusing on wetlands. Some very interesting discoveries were made during the research, such as Orthotrichum rogeri, Hamatocaulis vernicosus and Buxbaumia viridis (both protected species under the Habitat Directive 92/43/CEE), and thanks to the taxonomist's work many more are yet to come! See images in the photogallery.

Good news from the Parks: Alcotra 2007-2013 Interreg approved
Tuesday March 09th 2010 10:24:19 AM

2010, the International Year of Biodiversity, is being inaugurated with an important event for the history of cooperation between the Parc National du Mercantour and the Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime thanks to the approval of the “Plan intégré transfrontalier/Piano Integrato Transfrontaliero (PIT)” (Integrated Transboundary action Plan) financially supported within the framework of the “Alcotra 2007-2013” program. The Plan is mainly focused on improving the efficiency and quality in the cooperation along the French-Italian border with the aim of creating long-lasting networks among different subjects and ameliorating dialogue strategies through social, economical, environmental and cultural cooperation. Part of this large Plan concerns the “Inventaire Biologique Generalise/Inventario Biologico Generalizzato” (Generalised Biological Inventory) which will integrate and widen the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory + Monitoring started by EDIT in 2006, and will benefit from the collaboration of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris (MNHN) and the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali in Turin (MRSN). The IBG will continue all activities aimed at improving our knowledge on animal and vegetal diversity in the Marittime/Mercantour territory. It will represent an important source of information for all actions concerning land use and management, from agro-pastoral activities to a “Transboundary Ecological Network”, to the evaluation of the actions planned for a Protected Area. Moreover, it will be possible to give indications and technical support during the planning phase and for the development of mobility systems for touristic purposes along the transboundary territory, with the aim of assuring environmental sustainability. The financial support for the IBG will last for 2 years, and throughout this time several education and divulgation activities will be promoted together with scientific research activities, aimed at specialised public as well as the wider public. It may thus appear even more relevant the collaboration with the two scientific museums. For more information: Alcotra 2007-2013
