Udzungwa Mountains National Park Tanzania Africa Contact: Dr. Nikolaj Scharff, Natural History Museum Copenhagen, Denmark In 2006 proposed by: Prof. Dr. Henrik Enghoff, Natural History Museum of Copenhagen, Denmark In 2007 proposed by: Dr. László Peregovits, Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, Hungary This proposal is the result from discussions among a long list of researchers, find details here: http://www.atbi.eu/forum/?q=forum/6. The Eastern Arc mountains form the “hottest” of Continental African biodiversity hotspots with only few, poorly studied patches of pristine habitats remaining. Multiple nature reserves were proposed as ATBI+M site in East Africa (Mt. Kilimanjaro by Andreas and Claudia Hemp, and Mahale forest by Viola Clausnitzer) of which the proposers agreed to collaborate on ATBI activities in a limited set of focal sites in the Eastern Arc mountains. Online (www.atbi.eu/forum), a group of taxonomists was assembled consisting of EDIT members from Brussels (Belgium), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Budapest (Hungary), as well as some taxonomists from non-EDIT institutions and universities. The Natural History Museum of Copenhagen, Denmark, has worked together with Tanzanian institutions to set up the Tanzanian GBIF-node TanBIF. In June 2007, Thomas Pape of the NHM Copenhagen, visited the Eastern Arc mountains region to discuss the feasibility of long-term ATBI+M activities, which will be followed up with fieldwork and collection digitisations. Thomas Pape has visited the area for a feasibility assessment, download the report here: http://www.atbi.eu/forum/?q=node/44 Udzungwa National Park: http://sea.unep-wcmc.org/wdpa/sitedetails.cfm?siteid=19297&level=nat (Category II) -7.788, 36.673 |
